So what is Hook City RnB Vocal Box Edition?

Well, this is product dedicated to smooth RnB kits, riffs, loops, and sounds.

However, it's also dedicated to providing a bunch of great "talkbox" style hooks and vocal riffs.

Think old school Zapp and Roger, Jodeci, and plenty others...and that's the type of sound you're getting here.

Of course since I'm reviewing the KLI version, this makes it super easy to tweak, audition, manipulate, and mangle the sounds quickly.

You can play them as is, or go through the interface and add various effects for something new.

Quick Specs

- content: 4.5GB, 811 Kontakt patches

- format: KLI (Kontakt 4, Kontakt 5), Wav, Rex, Apple, Acid, RMX

- price: $129.95

So how does it sound?

It sounds really good. One thing I've learned about VIP Loops, they usually are able to deliver on the sound that they are going for, and I personally end up liking their RnB stuff because it always tends to have that classic vibe that I grew up on.

Probably because they were actually making RnB back then as well!

There are some nice keys, guitars, and a bunch of synths that are usable. You also get a few strings, and I like the fact that they give you the drums as loops as well as single hit kits to work with.

The vocals are definitely authentic sounding, I just wish in some of the single vocal patches the loops started as soon as you hit the note instead of still being in "loop" format and coming in a little later.

I get that in the context of the kit, but when it's just vocals in a patch I feel they should be edited to play immediately when the key is pressed for better usability.

So what's the bottom line?

If you like RnB, and specifically the "talkbox" sound, then this may be something you want to checkout.

There are not many people putting out libraries with talkbox samples that actually sound good so if that's something you need, make sure you give it a good listen.

I give Hook City RnB Vocal Box Edition 4 out of 5 subs, I think they hit the right style in terms of RnB and the vocals definitely capture that true talkbox vibe.
