So what is The Foundry?

It’s a new sound design tool for Kontakt with tons of content and zero presets.

Yep, there are no presets, instead it uses a really cool randomization engine that you have control over based on various adjectives and sound descriptions.

There’s also plenty of fx, modulation, and sequencing to allow lots of customization to your newly created instruments.

There are 4 voices, which can morph between them, lock or randomize parameters and generally just go crazy with it.

As I mentioned with the sequencing, you can also use 3 different lfos and step modulation for things like pitch, filter, volume, and pan.

So how does it sound?

You can really get some cool sounds out of this, and what I really like is the way that you can get those sounds.

Going through and creating a sound based on different descriptions or “feels” allows you to quickly come up with something you want, even though it’s all based on randomization.

It can do smooth ambient pads, rhythmic loops, and nasty percussive hits all very easily. Not to mention once you have a foundation you can further customize it by picking your sounds specifically for each voice, adding fx, or even throwing some sequencing into the mix.

I’ve seen preset randomization in many instruments before, but this is a really cool way to give you control over that process.

I was also impressed with the variety of sound, being able to pull up anything from light textures to horrific leads is pretty cool.

So what’s the bottom line?

I always love seeing new developers on the scene, it’s fun to see what different minds can bring to the table.

I give The Foundry 4 out of 5 subs, it’s a really cool instrument that encourages “controlled” experimentation while producing sounds that are actually usable.

Each person using it has the ability to quickly produce unique sounds all based on the parameters they chose for randomization.

You don’t ONLY have to randomize though, you can do directly to the voices and pick what you want, and even lock specific voices and randomize the others.

Bottom line, it’s very flexible and fun to work with!
